Manchester Council On Aging (COA)
Executive Board Meeting
June 11, 2008

Members Present:  Bob Howard, Linda Kiley, Denise Samolchuk, Janet Groth-Turner, Joslyn Becker
Members Absent:  Steve Gillespie and Susana Thompson
Staff Present:  Nancy Hammond and Leslie Davidson
Friends of the COA Present:  Martha Elder

The meeting was called to order at 5:34 by Chair Samolchuk.
The Board reviewed the minutes of the May 14, 2008 meeting.  Bob Howard moved to accept the minutes; Linda Kiley seconded the motion and all members were in favor.

Chair’s Report:  Outgoing Chair Samolchuk thanked the COA Executive Board members for their support during the past six years.  All members thanked Chair Samolchuk for her hard work.

Bob Howard, Chair of the Nominating Committee, presented the slate of officers for 2008-2009.  The Committee nominated:  Chair – Steve Gillespie, Vice Chair – Bob Howard, Secretary – Joslyn Becker.  Janet Groth-Turner moved to accept the nominations; Joslyn Becker seconded the motion and all members were in favor.

Director’s Report:  Director Nancy Hammond reported that the total budget remains stable.  The COA purchased the shredders that were discussed at the May 18, 2008 Executive Board meeting.

Nancy informed the Board that Manchester will soon become a member of the TRIAD Council.  TRIAD’S mission is to improve the security of the senior population through education and support from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney, the Police and Fire Chiefs and the COA.  All expenses are paid by the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.  Nancy wants to immediately initiate a house numbering program that will assist first responders to 911 emergency calls.  Bob Howard offered to join our local TRIAD Council.

The Board discussed its gift to Fred Rice. A shadow box, weathervane and decorative pineapple were suggested.  The gift will be presented at Fred’s farewell reception.  Photos of the Rice family and its historic role in Town history will also be gathered for the reception on July1, 2008.

Manchester COA Event/Trips were presented to the Board for review.  There are fifteen events and trips scheduled before Labor Day.  Linda Kiley moved to accept the COA activities; Janet Groth-Turner seconded the motion and all members were in favor.

Friends of the COA Report:  Martha Elder said the Town phonebook should be ready in October.

The Friends will donate two benches in honor of Fred and Alice Rice and Ann Wood Kelly.  The benches will be placed outside the COA Office.  The Friends hope to supervise the upkeep of the benches.

After the Board presented a gift to Denise Samolchuk, Bob Howard moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:08, seconded by Linda Kiley.  All were in favor.
