Manchester Council On Aging (COA)
Executive Board Meeting
September 12, 2007
Members Present: Denise Samolchuk, Steve Gillespie, Bob Howard, Suzanne Thompson and Joslyn Becker
Staff Present: Nancy Hammond and Leslie Davidson
Friends of the COA Present: Martha Elder
Chair’s Report: Chair Denise Samolchuk called the COA Board Meeting to order at 5:34 PM. A Motion to accept minutes from the June 13, 2007 meeting was made by Suzanne Thompson and seconded by Steve Gillespie.
Because Kathy Atwater resigned as Board Secretary, the Chair asked for volunteer candidates to fill the position. The Board voted Joslyn Becker to by Kathy’s replacement.
Director’s Report: Nancy Hammond reported that the cell phone recovery program has earned over $100.00 and will continue to be a COA activity. A copy of the COA monthly report to the Board of Selectmen was distributed and reviewed. After the COA monthly and annual budgets were reviewed, attention turned to the COA fall/winter events and trips. Nancy talked about the annual Harvest Craft Fair on October 27th. Steve Gillespie moved to accept the events and trips as long as activities/events can be added. Activities geared toward men will also be explored. Bob Howard seconded the motion.
New Business: Nancy directed the Board’s attention to an upcoming press release titled, “New volunteer Opportunity in Manchester”. The Friends of the COA will sponsor a free senior healthcare advocacy program using memorial contributions for Ann Wood Kelly. Funded health advocate volunteer training will begin in October and the program will begin in December. Regina Villa, coordinator of the Ann Wood Kelly Fund, will address questions from the Board at the October meeting. A motion to accept the press release was made by Steve Gillespie, seconded by Bob Howard.
The Director introduced the COA Board to “My Life, My Health”, sponsored by the Gloucester Senior Care and grant funded, the program trains people over 45 to self manage chronic health conditions. Six 3 hour workshops will be offered on Fridays at 1 PM. Various Manchester venues will host the sessions. A motion to accept the program as a COA activity was made by Suzanne Thompson, seconded by Steve Gillespie.
Old Business: Questions were asked about the Town’s reaction to the proposed donation of the old van. Denise explained that although the Board of Selectman accepted the offer, the Town Administrator rejected the van because it has mechanical problems. It was suggested that a detailed van use procedural manual should be prepared by the COA office because the grant language states that the COA office manages their use. There will be more discussion.
There is a need for a defibrillator on the second van. Martha Elder will take that information to the Friends.
A motion to adjourn at 6:36 PM was made by Bob Howard and seconded by Steve Gillespie.
Respectfully submitted,
Joslyn Becker
