SUMMER 2012 SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT
FT & PT LIFEGUARD POSITIONS
The Manchester Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting applications for Full Time & Part Time Waterfront Lifeguard positions for the 2012 Summer Season.
Characteristics of job
This is patrol work in overseeing activity at Singing Beach in the Town of Manchester. The job environment involves an outdoor beach site with rocks, changing water depths due to high and low tides, and surf ranging from minimal to potentially dangerous. This job requires weekend shifts and may also require consecutive days of responsibility and work.
Essential functions
Assists in the daily activities and responsibilities of the beach under the direct supervision and leadership of the head lifeguard including the following essential functions: Patrols Singing Beach sand and swimming area: monitors swimmers, and directs nearby boaters, windsurfers, kayakers, jet-skiers, etc. out of swim area. Performs rescue maneuvers, CPR, and First Aid as necessary. Transmits requests for police, ambulance, fire, or harbormaster assistance when needed. Ensures that maximum safety precautions are practiced and rules and regulations are followed by all beach patrons. Assumes responsibility for care of all equipment and supplies used in daily operations. Oversees that storage area is regularly kept clean, stocked, and organized. Reports to head lifeguard when supplies are low or equipment is damaged. Performs related duties
and on-the-job-training as specified by the Head lifeguard, and the Director of Parks & Recreation, or as the situation dictates.
Minimum qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age and have current certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. Lifeguarding certifications must be from the American Red Cross, YMCA, Boy Scouts of America or similar. Previous lifeguard experience at an oceanfront beach site is desirable.
Pre-Employment Lifeguard Testing
All lifeguard candidates must demonstrate competency during the Manchester Parks & Recreation Department’s pre-employment evaluation to be considered for employment. Pre-employment testing consists of the following:
• Timed 500 yd swim (20 lengths in a 25 yd pool) which must be completed in less than 10 minutes.
• Recover 10lb object in 9'-12' of water
• Passive victim recovery
• Active victim recovery
• Submerged victim recovery
• Front & Rear Hold Escapes
• 25 Yard Spring in less than 20 seconds
*The Lifeguard test will be conducted at an indoor swimming and will be held in late April or Early May.
** Please note: Goggles cannot be used during the lifeguard testing.
*** We strongly encourage you to practice for the timed distance swim before you take the test.
****Experience indicates that many applicants overestimate their swimming ability in the early season.
Employment Time Frame
Singing Beach will be opening for the season on Saturday, May 26, 2012. The beach is open weekends only from June 3rd. Beginning June 4th, the beach will be staffed 7 days per week through Labor Day.
Salary
$12.35/hr

All lifeguard candidates should complete the Town of Manchester Seasonal Employment Application. Completed applications should be submitted with your letters of reference and a copy of all of your certification cards.

Completed packets can also be dropped off in the Parks & Recreation Office which is located in room #7 at Manchester Town Hall, 10 Central Street, Manchester, MA 01944.
Once your completed application is received, you will be contacted to setup an interview. During the interview you will be given the list of lifeguard candidate testing dates.
