Trash Disposal
To dispose of household trash, residents have two basic options. First, the Town has a curbside collection program allowing residents who wish to have their trash collected at curbside pay a fee for this service through the trash sticker program ($1.25 per sticker effective July 1, 2008). One sticker per bag or one sticker per barrel placed on the top item in the barrel. Second, the Town has a Transfer Station where residents must purchase a yearly sticker ($125.00 effective July 1, 2008). .
Large Items: One large item per week with a $1.25 sticker attached. Appliances, televisions, computer monitors, tires and propane cylinders are accepted at the Transfer Station after a disposal fee is paid at the DPW Office in Town Hall and a paid sticker is affixed to the item.
Recycling
Recycling is mandatory in Manchester. By Town By-Law, residents must separate designated materials from their trash to be recycled. The Town provides curbside collection of these materials every other week. In addition, the Town has free drop off containers at the Transfer Station to recycle selected materials. A Transfer Station sticker is not required to drop off recycleables only.
Composting
State regulations also prohibit including yard wastes such as grass clippings, leaves, and brush, in the regular trash. Instead, the Town has a compost site for residents to drop off these types of waste. In addition, the Town also has a home composting program which may be beneficial.
Where Does My Trash Go: Disposal material collected as trash at the curbside or the transfer station is taken to Wheelabrator, North Andover incinerator located in North Andover, Massachusetts, where the waste is burned and used to generate electricity.
