Meter Reading
Water meters are read four times per year in January, April, July, and October by Town employees.
All efforts are made to read meters at around the same time each quarter. However, homeowners should expect some slight fluctuation in the number of days between readings.
Typical meters have a device installed, often referred to as a button, that allows the meter to be read from the outside of the home using a special device.
Home owners are asked for their assistance in keeping the "button" attached and accessible for our meter readers.
Special Readings & Service Turn Ons/Turn Offs
Readings for final water bills are available on request. Final readings are required for changes in real estate ownership.
All readings must be made by the Town, and a fee for the reading will be included in the bill.
Requests for final readings should be made at least 48 hours in advance. Requests made with less notice will result in a higher fee.
For homes also connected to the Town sewer system, a sump pump inspection is also required as part of the final reading.
Requests for turn ons and turn offs of a service may also be made by contacting the DPW.
Meter Repairs
Sometimes, our attempts to read your meter may be unsuccessful. This may be due a broken meter or connection to the "button". If this occurs, the Town will contact you to schedule and appointment to repair the meter. Your cooperation with assisting us in scheduling and making the appointment is greatly appreciated.
Meter Accuracy
The type of meter used by the Town is a turbine type meter which measures the amount of water used based on how fast the water moves the turbine inside the meter. This type of meter tends to favor the customer because, as the meters gets older, it will tend to turn slower and, as a result, under register the amount of water used.
The meters used by the Town all comply with American Water Works Standards and are accurate to within 98%.
